Who wants cross kidney to We got you? We got you. Oh! It's a pinnacle! I'll go make it something else! What am I doing here? Fell under the water, uh dove in the rest of the dude. We'll go find a friend to get to relax, dump the nail around the case. Then why don't you go in there and talk about? Alright, maybe I will. I said maybe. I'm gonna take a flabber off in my head. Okay. He must be allergic to bees or something because he was running like a bat out of hell. Hello, Sydney. Hi, who is this? It's your killer host. My name is Parker, your resident horror fanatic. I'm Caroline, Scaredy Scream Queen.
I'm Ian, Scary Movie Skeptic. And welcome to. What's your favorite scary movie? What's your favorite scary movie is a horror film podcast where we're on a journey to find our favorite scary movie one at a time. Whether you hate them or love them, join us and discover yours. Spoilers ahead, so plan your movie screening every weekend before the episode release. I would like to begin this episode by telling you my favorite quote from this movie that happens in the first like five seconds. She says, Sack up, Billy. It's called investigative journalism for a reason. Oh, I forgot that was even part of this movie. It really made me laugh. I rewound it and watched it twice when I started this.
Greetings, Caroline and Ian and everyone listening. How are you? Howdy, howdy. Spouty spouty. Caroline, nothing. I was just gonna say better after watching this film. Hmm. And listener. Oh, glad to hear it. So this week we did something that we have done before and that you too can be part of, but we took a request from one of our many wonderful patrons, and you can also request a movie by subscribing at patreon.com slash scary moviepod. The podcast hosts of the people. We listen to the people. Exactly. And so this episode goes out to Maggie, who we have two patrons named Maggie. So if you're listening to this and you're like, I didn't request this, not you, Maggie, the other Maggie.
Thank you, Maggie. So thank you, Maggie, but also thank you, John, her father. They're the cutest father-daughter pair, and they watch movies together, scary movies together in preparation for our podcast every week. How cute is that? Aww. Love it. Bringing families together. That's what we started this podcast. One magnificent murder at a time. Alright, well, enough build. Let's reveal. We watched today Tucker and Dale versus Evil. A movie that has popped onto my radar many times, but I had never seen it until Maggie, not you Maggie, the other Maggie, said, please watch it. Oh, and boy did girl did we? Non-binary, did we? I have to say though, I pulled this little flick up to rent on Amazon.
Took one look at the cover, and sorry, Maggie and John, but like I was judging a little bit. I was not excited for this journey that we went on. Well, not to spoil too much, but I think an hour and a half later maybe you learned a little something about judging a movie by its cover. I certainly did. Boy. Girl, did we? They did we. Well, Tucker and Dale versus Evil, you know, it came out in 2010. Eleven years ago. And seeing all of those children, teens, I guess, young adults, out camping. I thought, look at them getting fresh air with their pod socially distancing from the world. Yeah. So already this movie ahead of its time.
Crazy the fashion choices that change in just ten years. Uh riddle down jeans. Yeah, that that's what I was really mentioning when I said that. I was under the impression watching this movie that it was much older than 2010 because in 2010 were people still wearing like layered polos. Yeah, yeah, yeah. Bright blue polo just really did me in. I just, I don't know. I was watching this and I was like, here we go, 2006. Yeah, that's what it felt like. Well, alas, it was directed and co-written by Eli Craig, who also wrote and directed Netflix's Little Evil in 2017, and he's also a performer. He was in The Rage Carrie 2 from 1999, and even makes a cameo as the cameraman in Tucker and Dale vs.
Evil. It was also co-written by Morgan Jurgensen. What if? How funny would it be if it was shot in 2010, but they intentionally made the film 2006 genre? Just like four years retro. Yeah, it's like, oh, we're gonna go back in time. Four years. Well, now I want to know when it was what if it was shot in 2006 and we are just like picking up on the vibe. Hold Wikipedia on my bay. We are um chronological fashion gurus. Well, because I will I will have to agree with you. I feel like 2010 is a little late for the double polo uh no, this was shot in June 2009 in Canada. Oh. Well, that's the thing.
They say Canada's late to the trends. So yeah, it has to make its way all the way up there. Those Abercrombie polos took a while to get up there. Well, mystery solved. Netflix, take this off the list for unsolved mysteries because we have solved it. Alright. On this cast list, we have Tyler LeBine as Dale. He has been in a ton of TV. He was in Rise of the Planet of the Apes from 2011, Escape Room in 2019. We saw that. Don't remember a thing about it. We saw it in theater. I remember there were escape rooms. Um, and Tyler was also in Little Evil. Alan Tudik plays the role of not one, not three. Tudic.
You know, this is the first time I'm hearing that out loud. And it was funny, but what was funnier was Ian, not even a beat passing. And you're like, oh. We can always count on Ian. Ian just sits here poised, ready to make fun of the names. Like Toochie. Isn't Toochie what a Stanley Doochie? Stanley Toochie. That's not funny, but that's just that's a name. All right, Tucker, the role of Tucker. Um Alan was in A Knight's Tale in 2001, Dodgeball in 2004. Shut up. And the TV show Firefly, and its movie version, Serenity from 2005. He was also in Rogue One in 2016. He is very versatile, apparently. At least getting around. He's got two dicks.
I am over it. Uh he's also been in a lot of TV like Arrested Development, Santa Clarita Diet, and Doom Patrol. Um, apparently, he also has a prolific voice for voice acting. Um, he's voiced characters in Ice Age. Who? Do you know? Uh I forgot, and I have only seen that movie once, so I couldn't even tell you if I knew. Oh my god, a classic. Put that on the podcast. I love Ice Age. Um he was also played voice characters in Astro Boy, Wreck It Ralph, Frozen One, and Two, Big Hero Six, Zootopia, Moana, Harry Lee Quinn, American Dad, and the list goes on. This guy is rolling in it. He's got a face for acting.
A voice for acting. A voice for acting. Um, he also does a lot of video game voiceovers and has been on Broadway multiple times. Also, I gotta say All-Star cast here. Tudic, if you're listening, I want to apologize. Because I realize that probably you had a rough time as a kid with the last name, and I I I don't mean any disrespect. You know, if he's listening, he's probably just thinking, why are they mispronouncing my last name? And it's probably something totally different. And we're just laughing. Is it Tuddick? Is it T-U? D-I-C-K. D-Y-C-K. T-I-C-K. Two dike or two to-dike. It could be dyke. It could be Tuddick. I don't know. Tudik. It's probably Tudik. It's Tudik.
Tuddock. I'm done. Yeah. Greetings, listener. It is I, Parker, chiming in from the Great Beyond to let you know that I have confirmed it is pronounced Alan Tudick. Enjoy the rest of the episode. Uh we have Allen Bowden. I thought he was hot. Huh. Okay. Um didn't expect to be judged on my own podcast. Voice actor Parker. Uh we have Katrina Bowden as Allison or Allie. She was in 30 Rock and The Bold and the Beautiful, Piranha 3 Double D in 2012. Haven't we seen that? No, we watched Piranha 3D. That's the sequel, Piranha 3 Double D. Oh Jesus. She was also in Scary Movie 5 in 2013 and Nurse 3D in 2013. Really into the D's.
Nurse is oh, you're laughing at three. I was like, nurse is a regular word, Caroline. Y'all are off the rails. Nurse 3D. Triple D's. Um, I'm only like halfway through this list, so settle down, guys. Um Jesse Moss plays the role of Chad. Um he was in Final Destination 3, which you can hear us discuss on the Patreon. Um Jesse was also in Ginger Snaps in 2000 and The Uninvited in 2009. The rest of the cast includes Philip Granger as the sheriff and a lot of other actors, some of whom are legitimately successful, but if I'm learning their character names for the first time on IMDB, dot dot dot. Yeah. I see a recurring theme here, and everyone is just working in the parody space.
Hey, to be had there. I I'm not a bat, not nothing bad about it. I'm just Final Destination, scary movie, um Piranha 3 Double D. Double D. Tucker and Dale versus Evil. I mean, it's on the list. Don't you dare categorize these together. You just said it wasn't a bad thing. So what's the truth, Ian? What's the truth? Well, the uh summary of this movie goes a little bit like this. An extremely large group of college teams. And it went like the summary goes a little bit like this. An extremely large group stop! No, but I'm not I'm I laugh because you had caps of extremely and then it was like, oh yeah, it is a very large what I want.
Yeah. It's a large number. Nine kids in an SUV. The summary goes a little like this. You say it a little faster every time. And the summary goes something like this. I don't want something like this. Yeah. Goes a little something like this. An extremely large group of college teens are going camping in the woods. A recipe for disaster. When they stop for gas, they judge a couple of country guys, Tucker and Dale, and basically decide that they're in a horror movie. But Tucker and Dale are also just on a vacation at their new lake cabin while out fishing, which Dale doesn't even like, but he does it because he loves Tucker. Aww. They see a hot girl, Allison, fall off a rock, and they save her from drowning.
The teens think they're kidnapping her. And then hijinks. Alison is having a lovely time at T and D's cabin, but the teens, led by head douche Chad, begin accidentally killing themselves trying to save her as the showdown becomes increasingly hostile. Deaths include tree branch impalement, falling on a stake, jumping in a wood chipper, head shooting, a weed whacker to the face, burning, and cabin explosion. Thankfully, no dogs were harmed. Tucker is out of commission after a car crash, but Dale faces off against douche Chad, whose face was burned off in the explosion. Backstory reveal. We find out that Chad's parents were murdered by hillbillies in what is known as a Memorial Day Massacre, and now Chad is prejudiced against all hillbillies.
In a shocking turn of events, Chad discovers he is half hillbilly and falls out of the window after Dale throws chamomile teal in his face, triggering his allergies. Tucker lives and Dale and Allison Mac at the bowling alley. The end, motherfucker. That was a beautiful reading. The Rotten Tomatoes critic score is an eighty-five percent. The audience score is an eighty-four percent. The critics' consensus is quote like the best horror comedies, Tucker and Dale versus Evil mines its central crazy joke for some incredible scares, laughs, and believe it or not, heart. Aww. Wow. Yeah, that was a mic drop, Ian. Incredible. Um now, Ian, why don't you rest those pipes and Caroline? Tell me what did you think of Tucker and Dale versus evil?
Uh well, like I said, I thought we were in for a miserable journey just from p the cover, which I should have known better. Ten minutes in, though, my heart changed. I fell in love with these two adorable overall wearing giver hat wearing beer-drinking lovable dudes. She was aroused. No, but yeah, uh what a just cute, heartwarming, belly laugh inducing. I like to think of it as the backstory behind all those Texas Chainsaw Masker movies that I just love to hate, you know? It kind of gives you a different perspective of storytelling. Yeah, I think Ian hates to hate. Love it. I feel warm and fuzzy inside after watching this movie. It really just opened my eyes.
Okay, enough. You've had your chance. Um, I, like Caroline, well, not like Caroline, I had no thoughts about the cover. I was like, cool, whatever. But like Caroline, the first ten minutes of this movie, like Ian, kind of connected the dots earlier, that a lot of these actors seem to be in these um what what you just call them? Um parody movies. And that was kind of the vibe of the first couple of minutes where they're in the car and somebody forgets the beer and they're just like, what? And I was like, oh my god. And then just the second Tucker and Dale show up, I was like, oh, I'm sensing something a little better. And then I grew to love them as well.
I thought they were so sweet and fun. And like you were mentioning, like, I watch a lot of horror movies, and I guess this is just the Disney maleficent of horror movies, because it was so much fun to think that something that I feel many times anyway, that a lot of the trouble caused in horror movies just because teens are shit. And so, of course, teens are shit, of course, these entitled teens come in and they're just like, look at these people who look a little grungy, are murderers, and no, they just needed to realize that love manifests in many different forms. And I loved love is love. Yes, I love love, and I did think it was really funny.
I thought that a lot of the the kills were nicely gruesome, and a lot of the humor was pulled off well, which sometimes in comedies like this, like we were mentioning the scary movies and stuff, they make a joke and I just get exhausted with them trying to tell, like, really be like, no, this joke is funny, laugh at it. And that wasn't happening here. I am o. Um, I thought that was what was that joke in the turkey, killer turkey movie that they said multiple times. John Bene Ramsey. Yeah. Oh, I almost was able to forget about that movie. Thanks for bringing it back up. Sorry, continue. Well, I was when you said that the jokes don't land.
That was I was just off on a ramble. So, Ian, why don't you tell us your critic review of Tucker and Dale? A masterpiece. Um beautifully, you know, I am a sucker for parody movies. I gotta be straight up with you. I grew up loving watching Scary Movie and Austin Powers and those type of movies just ate it all up. But, you know, I can see why people sometimes don't enjoy them because sometimes they're just a little over the top, and you know, just too forceful. But with that all being said, and I think you mentioned it, this gets the stamp of approval. Well executed. It was funny, but it was not like you said, it's not like here, let me try to force this this joke down your throat twenty times, so you get it.
Either get the joke or they move on. And um I thought it was very well executed. Plus, like Cabin in the Woods, you know, relevant. Yes, and you know, it's interesting, this came out in 2010. In 2011, Scream 4 released another horror comedy in a similar vein. In 2012, Cabin in the Woods released another comedy in a similar vein, which I'm looking forward to reviewing with you. You ho's, but it hasn't happened yet. And then in 2013, Your Next released another comedy in a similar vein. And I know that those three movies had some like things where they were all kind of made at the same time, but released. But it was just kind of like every year we get just a fabulous little horror comedy.
And Ian, you're being a little loose and free with the term parody. I do think that this is a legitimate horror comedy and not a parody. Rotten Tomatoes saying that it was scary. Mmm, Rotten Tomatoes, you should watch more movies because but um parody's not. I I think parody's not the right term, but also Well, it's the right term. Like I don't consider scary movie a horror movie. Scary movie is a parody. And I consider, you know, like I just mentioned, Scream and You're Next. Like those are horror comedies. Maybe they're a little bit darker than Tucker and Dale. And I think Tucker and Dale does skirt the line a little bit more than those other ones do.
But I do think that it earns its horror badge. It it does put parody in the sense that it's paradizing against traditional horror. In essence, it's a parody in genre. I it's not. But like I said, a lot of the jokes that would normally annoy me, I thought were funny, like when he sees Tucker's fingers and he says they got his bowling fingers. That was hilarious. Um and then just any kind of how can you not like that guy too? He's like so likable. I know. I wanted to give him a hug. Um and like you said in the summary, Ian, he doesn't want to fish because he's afraid of hurting the fish. But he loves Tucker, so he does it anyway.
I love that. And we made mention earlier of um this beautiful theme that I love about not judging a book by its cover. And Tucker or Dale was so disappointed in Allison because she's from a farm as well, and she seems to be different, but she fell into the same trap as her friends of judging them, and it was hurtful. And look at the beautiful, bountiful, fruitful relationship that Tucker and Alison or Dale, damn it, that Dale and Allison ended up cultivating together. To be fair, he had a reaper with him. That's that was the funniest part, though. He just was holding. And he like walked like with a limp up to them. And then they get to that lake house and it looks horrible, and he's just like, I love it.
Oh man, that was a good time. Also, something that uh a conversation that the three of us have had many a time that I thought was pretty profound, is that these kids are all coming to this lake from a college, and they seem to have some sort of bee in their bonnet that they are somehow just like the shit because they're in college. And Allison says this beautiful thing to him that education and intellect aren't the same thing. And I think that that was just a lovely moment where it's like they have this like class privilege that they're a judge, because I think that's what it boils down to, is that they're like, look at these little pores, how gross.
And I think that, you know, uh it's all a little more nuanced than that. And for a movie like Tucker and Dale to understand that there are complexities um to goodness and appreciation and empathy and friendship is beautiful. I think in general, like the situations that pop up throughout this movie are very creative. Like when they were digging that hole for the outhouse, and then the kids come up and they're like, Look, she's digging her own grave. Like I never would have thought of that. That whole sequence, just like I was just laughing and just wanting them to give me more of that because it was so ridiculous, but in a very creative, well thought out way.
Yes, well thought out, I think is key because this movie it really nails all of the like horror things. Like it's not just a comedy that's like we're just going to be funny villains. Like, it gets the like setup of like the creepy guys at the gas station that we see in like Friday the 13th and the Hills Have Eyes, and the like naughty teens, and the like kind of convoluted backstory, and it was hilarious that like Hillbilly has become like a race in this movie. Like, I don't know what's down there. Would you say it nailed it in the head? That I think that's the uh that's the one part of the movie where I just like what even is that?
That thing swinging down from the ceiling. So, and you just finger in the wound there. The one wound I have. I I knew that was coming. I was waiting for the scene where she woke up and went to the wall of the newspapers and then gets freaked out by the newspaper clippings that they didn't take down. Yeah, but I thought at least one of the friends would have noticed those. Yeah, it was just part of the ambiance. This movie doesn't need to be so specific. It's just setting the mood. Even because that's a nice Texas chainsaw with like the bones from the ceiling, and then even the bees come out and he's swinging the chainsaw around his head.
That was like my favorite part. I laughed so hard at that. And then they even brought it back with that guy gets stabbed on the tree stump and the bee lands on his nose. You pay for what you get in this movie. Exactly. And get what you pay for. Honestly, think about this. If you lived on just a quiet, serene, beautiful Texas cannibal farm, and a bunch of teens just came literally into your house, I would think about Chainsaw massacring them too. So this movie just really opens my eyes to some of the less sympathetic characters of the movies that we've watched so many times on this podcast. Another thing that I love about Tucker and Dale versus Evil is as horny as I was for a little Tuckerendale fantasy there.
Um thought about that too. But I think it's really lovely. They're redecorating. Yeah, I know, but you could make a porno parody about the parody. Well, I I wouldn't because I think it's lovely to see like such an intimate, platonic male friendship. I don't think we see that as much in movies. And they made that one like blowjob joke at the beginning when the sheriff pulls them over, but it's not like the movie was exhausting me the whole time with like gay? It was just no, they just loved each other and they say it, but that's all they are, and they have such a close bond. And when Tucker is whatever happened to him at the after that car wreck, little inconsistency there, and he tells him that um were they catching lizards or frogs or uh frogs, frogs, yeah.
And he told him that he could just never catch as many, but he had been putting uh Dale down needlessly and he needed to believe in himself. It was just like, uh touchy. I wrote in my notes I said, if Tucker dies, it's over. It's over. This movie would go from a smash to a slash so fast if Tucker died because I would be traumatized. So Or if the dog died. Props on keeping it. That dog was so sweet too. Honestly, even when she woke up and was like, uh, a dog, I was like, that dog looks way too sweet. Let's let's talk about the one issue with this movie. Let's uh let's hear it. The length.
Is it long? I feel like the last 30 minutes could have been. Yeah, Ian, I think you just don't have an hour and a half in your attention span available because this doesn't last long. I'm done with you, hooks. How dare you? Ian, this movie is an hour and twenty nine minutes. Oh. Maybe I was just tired. Yeah, I think you're just tired because I mean, I it does get when you watch the ridiculous happen over and over again. I don't think the deaths ever get old. They're so funny. Especially I really enjoyed when that guy gets lit on fire and then the the not-so smart girl throws alcohol on him to put it out. Oh yeah.
That was hilarious. But I I think that it does kind of get a little repetitive, but I thought the finale in the like lumber mill or whatever was really fun, and the way that they're revealing, like I said, these completely ridiculous things about Chad being half hillbilly. I think that like that's a spicy ending. And I even went back to check something, and the first well, it's literally 45 seconds with the reporters. Um, I could completely forgotten about that. That is the end of the movie, and Chad kills them. So Chad is still out there. It was mainly just the lumber mill scene where he checked out, I could tell. Yeah, I I don't know why.
He missed the whole chamomile tea thing. Can't remember the whole that that whole nonsense. He missed out on it. Nonsense is a perfect way to describe that because I I think that the movie what worked for me about the lumber mill is that the movie is like, we can't even try to like pull this off seriously. Like, just get it done, be silly. And I was so things were crazy, and I was just like, mm-hmm. Yeah, of course, of course, chamomile. To be fair, chamomile tea is I don't I don't really like chamomile tea. Oh, he has asthma though. Apparently, you can't drink chamomile tea. Yeah, it triggers his allergies. Yeah, I like chamomile tea. Me too.
Shamomaly. Well, you guys, we're like the Tucker and Dale of podcasting, the three of us. Just lovable. Everyone wants to give us a hug. And poor. Big dreams, lots of love. Yeah. Well, what would you guys say is the most memorable murder from Tucker and Dale? And there's a lot of choices here. There are a lot. I'm actually going to start us out because I never go first and I want to. But I just, it was just so funny to me that guy running towards Tucker, putting the wood in the wood chipper, and it was just like the fastest second where he just moved and was like, It made me laugh so hard. I thought it was hilarious.
I loved that part, that death. And then, like, after every death in that scene, Tucker and Dale always are like, Are you okay? He's trying to pull him out and just like tearing him in half. Are you okay? I mean, the wood chipper is obviously the best, but I just have to like expand that to that entire scene because the chaos that ensues, like him turning around, hitting Allison with the shovel, her falling in, him falling in, the guy getting speared right afterwards, just like boom boom boom, laughing, crying, blood flying. It was amazing. And then they think that they're on some sort of suicide pact. Yes. Yeah. I'd have to I mean the wood chipper's obviously fantastic, but I think the one that caught me most off guard was when they were running in the woods with when he was running with a chainsaw.
The bees. I didn't expect him to get impaled. And that was the first uh right? That was the first murder or first death. So um you weren't I wasn't anticipating it yet, so I was like, whoa. Yeah, it is like a brilliant Yeah, that was pretty fun. Um would you guys say on a scale of one to five, how scary. One. One. Yeah, I think one as well. This is an easy movie to put on at a fun festive uh thing after the pandemic. Or, like, if you have a friend who's like, oh, I don't want to watch a scary movie, but you really want to watch a scary movie, but they're sensitive, you can put this on and everybody'll be chill and everybody'll have a good time.
A good um I mean, there's a lot of I think references that would go over a not horror fan's head, but it's still fun enough. And honestly, like the chainsaw, like there's iconic things that people would still get. It's just the the subtleties, you know. Supple tease? I'm over you. The supple camomile teas chimamole. From two dick, I just knew that this was going to be a long episode. Just kidding. Um, would you give Tucker and Dale versus evil? Can you imagine though? Imagine what? Growing up with that name. Oh my god. No, no. Oh my god. Shut up. Stop talking, Ian. Would you give Tucker and Dale versus evil a smash or a slash? Hardcore smash.
Smash and through walls, smashing through buildings. Hard smash. Smash, a lash, smashy, a skash, hardcore. Smash. Smash with an S S H. S C H. Shmash. Damn boy. Damn boy. Smash. I would give this a smash as well. Um the S Lee. I will add the quick caveat that a smash it is indeed. I don't think I would watch this again by myself. I think I would only watch it again with friends. But nonetheless, a smash and a rewatchable movie. Even though specific circumstances. You smell what I'm stepping in? Smelling it. Yes. Alright, you you um hillbillies. Would you no. What we kinda are. Yeah, RV, you little campers. What would you say is your favorite scary movie?
Hot take, my heart was stolen today. I'm putting on my overalls and saying that my favorite scary movie is Tucker and Dale versus Evil. And you know who looks great in overalls? Caroline. Me. She does. Ew! It uh is definitely not scary. But I think I would have to concur. I think uh an upset has happened in Ian's life as well. Wow. And Tucker and Dale stole my bum p-bum heart. Well, breaking news, a total eclipse of the heart witnessed here today on the podcast. That my heart may not go on. Oh. Well, I guess this is the last episode of What's Your Favorite Scary Movie? There has been a death, and we must cease. But it's like, no, it's not, because my favorite scary movie is Possessor.
Who are you putting in it later? Yeah, no, it's Possessor. And we will indeed be back again next week. Join us for a riveting discussion of Black Swan. Bum, boom, bum, bum, bum, bum, boom, bum. But until then, you can head over to Apple Podcasts and leave us a rating and a review. Alright, this review is coming to you straight from Skurdy Burr. Skurdy Burr says, great chats, five stars.
