You're magic. Like me. I need you to listen to me. The world's a hungry place. A dark place. Hi there. I only met two or three people like us. They died. When I was a kid, I bumped into these things. I don't know about magic. I I was called it the shining. Hello, City. It's your killer host. My name is Parker, your resident horror fanatic. I'm Caroline, Scaredy Scream Queen. I'm Ian, Scary Movie Skeptic. And welcome to. What's your favorite scary movie is a horror film podcast where we're on a journey to find our favorite scary movie one at a time. Do you guys remember when last week Ian said he wished someone would make a sequel of The Shining? Yeah, I do, because I said it. Well, I bet people are listening to this podcast out there because what do you know? One week later, in theaters. The production time. Incredible. I know. Obviously, Doctor Sleep, which is what we're discussing, if that wasn't made clear earlier, is uh a release from 2019. It was written, directed, and edited by Mike Flanagan, who is the creator of Haunting of Hill House. Uh which honestly, they look similar. Uh, you're telling me you didn't see a single cool blue tone. You didn't see the same color palette. He also uh wrote and directed and maybe edited some of these, but not all of them.
Oculus from 2013, Hush from 2016, Ouija Origin of Evil from 2016, and Gerald's Game, another Stephen King adaptation from 2017. This is based on the novel by Stephen King. And interestingly enough, uh Mike Flanagan said one of his main goals making this movie was to not only adapt Stephen King's novel, but to also create a sequel to both that and the Stanley Kubrick Shining. So lots of balls to juggle, and uh also lots of hearts to play with because Stephen King, as we discussed, does not like that Shining movie. And so I feel like he had some pressure, pressure here. Has there been any comments from Stephen King about Yeah, and I also am not totally sure what Stephen King is like obligated to say and things like that, so he he has he um is supportive.
First and foremost, this movie stars Ewan McGregor as Danny Torrents. I love that man so much. Um he's in the Star Wars Star Wars prequels, and more importantly, Moulin Rouge from 2001, and also train spotting from 1996, all around great guy. From what I can tell, pretty light involvement in horror, you know. So about time we got a little more action. Yeah. Big Fish. My personal favorite movie ever. Have you ever seen that? It's a really good one. Yeah, but this is shocking revelation here on the podcast. It's your favorite movie ever. Ever in the world, yeah. It is a really good movie. It's pretty good. It's just one of those ones that, like, every time you turn on, you're like, dang.
Strikes you to your core. Huh. Yeah. I would not have uh guessed that. Layers on layers, man. Um Rebecca Ferguson plays the role of Rose the Hat, and she is sexy. Yeah, and maybe we should give a little credit of the hat playing the hat. Because that hat's a prominent role in this movie. It's true, and kind of what makes her so sexy, I think. Uh she has that like I don't know New Orleans witchcraft kind of thing going on. But also that's very um what's the aesthetic that I'm thinking of where you wear the baggy shirts with the leggings? A sorority. Maybe not what quite what I was thinking, but I mean true. Yeah. Not not true.
I there was one moment when she turned sideways and I was like, dang, her boobs are bigger than they are letting on. What about that's what I was kind of talking about with the baggy shirt, but I wasn't gonna say it. You're a woman, you can. Yeah, she had some big ones. Or when she was just sucking up all the steam. All the steam. Yeah, that was a hot sexy shirt. She was sexy. I had to leave the room. Uh, anyways, Rebecca Ferguson plays in a lot of different things that I did not know about. She was in The Girl in the Train in 2016, Life from 2017, and the past two Mission Impossible films. Um, and another one coming up soon, I think, the next couple of years.
So she's on that Mission Impossible money. And also in The Greatest Showman from 2017. Oh, that's where I recognize her from. I don't even know what role. I watched that movie once and hated it. She really badly. She was the woman that sang never, never. Keep it going. Never enough. That one. Okay. Big, big shout-out to Kylie Kieran, who plays the role of Abra. Incredible acting. She is amazing. Um, she was the young Nala in The Lion King on Broadway in 2016. Makes sense. Um her theatricality. Right, right. She was she was she it seemed like she was a stage actress. Okay. Right, yeah, exactly. Jump out of the oh my god, you guys. Uh, this is her second feature film.
Um shout out to Carl Lumbly as Dick Halloran, Roger Dale Floyd as young Danny, Henry Thomas as Jack Torrance, and Alex Esso as Wendy Torrents. And let me tell you, that Wendy Torrents, I was like pretty stunned by it. It was specifically when Danny was out on the bench with Dick Holleran and she like came out and was like, Danny, Danny. Like, yeah, I was like, um, hello, Shelly, is that you? Her voice. I thought it was pretty incredible. If she was around for the first movie of The Shining, things would be game changer. You can't go back. You can't, it is what it is, you know. Sad. Um, also, Danny Lloyd, who we looked up in the last episode, who is a teacher now, uh, is billed as a spectator for this movie on IMDb.
Yeah, I wish I I had been more observant looking at the people in the crowds on in the movie. Not that he has like a standout face or anything. But still, you know, I'd like to know spectator to what? You know? Who is he? Who's he what's he spectator? What's his storyline? Alright. The IMDB summary reads Years following the events of The Shining, a now adult, Dan Torrance, meets a young girl with similar powers as his and tries to protect her from a cult known as the true knot, who prey on children with powers to remain immortal. Hmm. That seems like not totally correct, and they even misspelled Torrens, so it's like, who's writing these? Who's writing these?
Amateurs. I know, because these children have the same powers as Danny and Abra, and it's the power that makes the true knot immortal. So get it together. Alright, the Rotten Tomatoes critics score is 76%. Whoa. That's as of November 13th. So who knows? It may be a little higher, it may be a little lower by the time you're hearing this. The audience score is ninety percent. Wow. That's I think that's even more shocking. Um, and the critics' consensus is quote, Dr. Sleep forsakes the elemental terror of its predecessor for a more contemplative sequel that balances poignant themes against spine tingling chills. Jumping into first reactions, again, since this is a new release, I did not very much research into it because I just wanted to be in on the fun of the first reaction.
And I know you're already gonna say this, so I want to say it first, because y'all get to say it every time. And it's me this time. So I mean take control, we'll get to the um we'll get to the meat of it all. I would say maybe like the first 30 minutes of this movie, maybe like 45 or something like this, uh, I really did not enjoy. Agreed. And if they and I have an idea for this, so I'm not just throwing it out there and then leaving it, but if they were to cut a lot of that first half hour, I really enjoyed latter half things of the movie. Um so my thought on how they could fix this is you got three main characters.
You got Danny, Abra, Rose the Hat. Two of these characters are really interesting and cool. Abra and Rose the Hat. And one character, Danny, I was just like, nothing. Crickets. He was so bore snore. And he just, I don't know, I was just like, cool, you're struggling, you're back. Uh and I feel like nothing really happened with him until the end of the movie. So I was like, why do I have to keep looking at him when we have these cool vampire cult people? We have this cool, like super powers girl going on. And I think this movie would have been Chef's Kiss so rad if the movie had been like Abra like figuring out maybe she's not figuring out she has powers, but like about Abra, and then she has this issue that she's figuring out, and then Danny comes in and it's like a bum bum bum old hero that we love.
Cool, he's gonna step in and get to the more climactic things later in the movie. That would have been so good for me. I have so much to espouse about this topic, but can we take a step back real quick? Yeah, espouse. And I'm wondering what you guys think about all I could think about during this movie was the fact that I was like, this should have came out for Halloween. I feel like this is a perfect Halloween release movie because A, and we'll get to it more in depth later, wasn't like super scary. Yeah. And B, I just I felt like it was a very approachable uh versus like the shining. It was it was way more approachable and kind of all-encompassing for different audiences of scary movies.
Yeah. I really have no idea why they didn't do that because it really would have. I think this movie is not doing like super hot in the box office, and I've read it multiple critiques, like why didn't you release this a month earlier? It probably would have made more money. Yeah. So I think you're on the ticket there. Business. Oh, but what was your first reaction? Uh besides I wholeheartedly agree. I was sitting in the theater thinking, man, I don't I don't need this like weird recap backstory thing with diff like the worst thing is, and maybe it's because we just watched it, but something was really awkward to me for them like reenacting the the shining recap, so to speak, in the first half hour with different characters that were just off enough where it's just like this is kind of weird.
I thought some of that was really cool. Um, like I wasn't needed. I liked the well, I yeah, I uh man, this movie. After we left the theater, I was like, I'm being ripped into many different pieces right now because like there's some some parts that I was like, this is incredible what I'm seeing right now. There were some parts where I was like, I hate this. And then there were a lot of parts where I was like, yeah, this is pretty cool. And so like on that, I really liked Danny and Wendy in their like new apartment post hotel. I thought that was fun, and you know, it gives us a little scare. Uh some of the stuff with the shining recreations, I just thought were cool that they did it and could do it and could make it so cool.
I haven't really given much thought on what you're saying if they should have. But I mean it looked cool. I agree. I think it was kind of interesting to see their life after the shining. But at the end of the day, I think like in some ways, I think it would have added a layer of mystery and like uneasiness if they would have just started off without that. And and then you really you start off with Danny or Dan in his current age and then progress, and then you're like, Man, there's like a what like a 30-year gap between What if we like split the difference? What if we had like the opening with Danny in the um apartment with Wendy and maybe the lady in the tub, and then straight into Abra, and it's kind of like child to child.
I don't think I would have liked that. I I think I think that would be better because I think another complaint I have about the movie is for the first beginning introduction of Abra. It's like this weird, like, wait, where'd she come from? Yeah type vibe, and it's like maybe that could help. Yeah, I couldn't I I couldn't get a so like you know, the um Violet is actually the very opening scene, that little girl that gets murdered. And then it's from her to Danny, and then to adult Danny, and then there's some Rose the Hat with Snake by Dandy or whatever her name was. It was just like a bunch of different characters, and some of them were gone quickly, and some of them weren't.
And so I was like, is this ABR girl gonna be important? Is she not? And it took a really long time for them to be like, yeah, she's a character. Another thing was just finding or like watching the arc of how they were trying to pull in all what seemed to be a lot of different, like, dare I say, like storylines or like characters, and like wrap 'em up together. I felt Um, I don't think I agree with that, because I think there were three main stories, and they were all kind of parallel the whole time. There were a lot of people to get a grip on. Yeah, I think that's what I mean. And at the beginning, I just want to clarify, I think my main my main discomfort with it, uh, which interesting to know that Mike Flanagan edited this movie, because I thought the beginning was edited very strangely, where like, I mean, I liked a lot of the things I was looking at, but I felt like for the first 45 minutes you were getting like just consecutive, like two-minute scenes of like, scene, different character, scene, different character, scene, different character.
And I was just like, whoa, whoa, whoa, whoa. And there was like one where we were like with Abra, and then there was like a a minute-long scene of Danny just like waking up outside of a train station and looking around, and then scene over to where Rose the Hat or something like that. Yeah, and so there were just weird things where I was like, What am I looking at? Why are you jamming all of this stuff into this first 30 minutes? Like, I know you're wanting to get to the action, but like it just I don't know, it wasn't it wasn't flowing for me. I like honestly, it would be so cool to see this movie again, but just you know, fade fade in on him waking up of age.
I don't I don't even like that part. I would rather start the movie when either they kill the boy or when like they turn snake biting undy or something like one of those scenes later on where it's like we're already kind of in it. I didn't mind the beginning jumping around because at least I was interested and trying to like actively try to figure out who these people were and how the hell they played into this storyline. Once we started getting rolling, uh I just kind of lost interest. It seemed very amateur, very, you know, if the little girl would have been like a teenager, it could have been a new and improved Twilight to me.
Damn. I I just got so many Twilight vibes, and I was like, we get it, they're on your like they can find you, they're tracking you, they're gonna come get you. Like, I'm over it. Uh I actually was listening to a review by NPR's Pop Culture Happy Hour, and they called this an X-Men origin story movie, and I was kind of like, Yeah. And they said, like, even down to like villains with crazy names, and I was like, Yeah, stacks up. I will say though, I did think like, you know, now this is like one of those multiple dimensional things that I could actually follow. Like, you know, when Abra goes into her like state, or when Rose the Hat goes into her world, or like how they transport and all that.
I feel like I could follow that more than I could they explain that a lot, and maybe too much, but like they made sure we knew what was happening with a lot of people. I just yeah. I I don't think it even stands next to the shining. There were like Yeah. There's n I don't know. It just seemed like this was like a well-explained laid out on the table, like, ooh, kind of spooky, but we're not gonna scare you too much. We're gonna wring all the money out of you if you liked the shining. You know, I'm actually gonna disagree because I don't know, I feel like this is like, and this probably doesn't make it sound any better, but it's like the fun shining, you know?
Um there should be but I didn't think it was I wouldn't call it amateur. I thought that it was visually, I thought, really beautiful, and a few images really stand out in my brain. I loved Rose the Hat flying over the world and then being thrown back into her body. I liked, um, I mean, I did like the overlook throwback stuff. I thought that it was really um, I don't know, it was so bright and colorful and still unsettling, especially because it's you can tell that it is what we've seen in the shining, but it's not quite, and I think that's a little spooky. Uh I I think the story is interesting. I don't I don't love it as like a the shining story, but I if this weren't if Danny wasn't even in this movie, I'd probably love it, honestly.
I think so too. If it wasn't like a shining movie, and then they figured out how to have these interesting things with Abra and Rose the Hat, like one-on-one, or maybe like a new sidekick or something. I think I'd love it. I think there's if this was a new and improved Twilight, I would have the title of Twilight. It is it was it was Twilight to me. Like it but I I think I would have liked it more because it's not trying to I'm not comparing it to the shining and trying to like look deeper for those themes because they just like weren't there. And then sorry, at the end, when they pull they And when they tried to pull it back into the shining, and all those characters showed up, that was a cheap trick.
I hated that. I liked it, but we can talk about the end later. We might go down a rabbit hole here, but love a hole. There's one thing that just at my core I felt with The Shining than I felt here. Took more time with this movie than The Shining. But I can't help but to think that both movies have an underlying like mental illness, like subtext to it. And I'm curious what you guys think. Because like I feel like The Shining, while has a lot of elements going on, I feel like there is that like some type of like Yeah, it's very overtly about Jack going insane and struggling with addiction and uh empathy and connection.
In the same vein, when you take away when you take away Rose the Hat storyline and you boil it down to like Dan It's Dan, right? Dan and Abra. And obviously his struggle with alcoholism. But like I I just can't help but to be like, is there a deeper thing about like mental illness? Like abuse. I would say not that. Yeah, I don't think. But abuse, yes. I mean, Danny's clearly struggling with what happened to him when he was younger and unintentionally following in his dad's footsteps with alcoholism. Uh, I thought you were going to talk about Rose the Hat. And I think there's probably some interesting, like, mental stability things to dig in with into with Rose.
Uh, I would say I thought the opposite about Danny and Abra because at the end, you know, the movie started, and this is coming from a gay who thinks about things like this a lot, but at the beginning, he was like, Abra, you have to hide your shine and you have to pretend to be a normal person. And at the end, he was like, shine on, Abra. And I was like, Oh my god, be yourself. I love a be yourself message. I think there are a few scenes that specifically stand out to me. The opening scene with Violet that I mentioned earlier, I didn't love. I thought the whole purpose of them hunting children is for us to feel like they're like really evil.
And for them to feel or for us to feel like really unsafe with them. I would say yes for a later scene involving a young baseball man. But no here. Yeah, and I thought I I don't know. And I don't want to be the one on here saying, like, I would have loved to have seen that little girl like ripped apart and stabbed a bunch of times because like I I was uncomfortable with what was happening with Jacob Tremblay later. I d I didn't get the I like the whole purpose of that scene is for us to have like a sense of urgency and danger from the get-go and get it because I was like, Well, did they kill her or are they gonna divert her?
I think that was on purpose because when that happened, I was like, I don't know if these people are the same as Danny and Abra, and we didn't actually know that until the baseball scene. Yeah, I guess I just wanted to feel a little more gross about it. Like, I don't know. Everybody in this film is very archetypal. I feel like it's clear who's good and who's bad pretty quickly, and if you're gonna have that, then I want to feel dangerous about it already, you know? Well, I think there was a sense of danger for sure. We just didn't know what they were doing with the people that they were taking. Yeah, and I think maybe again, it's just like the way it cut away from it, I didn't love, and I had the same feeling like later when there's not the climax, but one of the climactic scenes when there's the shootout at the campsite, the way it was kind of cutting to and from like Billy killing himself and Andy on the ground, like writhing around.
I kept being like, if you would have lingered on something for a moment longer, shown me something for a moment longer, maybe I would have been scared. But instead of just kind of like, wait, whoa, oh, whoa. Like here, there, here, there. And so there were a few things where I was like, if you had maybe just framed it like slightly differently, I would feel spooked about it. But I I just couldn't. I wanted to feel spooked. There was no spook in this movie. Zero. But I think there could have been spook, which is frustrating. What is this rated? Uh I think R. Are you kidding me? You really think a boy get ripped apart. Barely.
R the tables have turned here. This this felt like I could have watched it on Disney Channel. I don't know. I mean, I would not disagree. I would love to hop on that Disney Channel. It was like the Rose the Hat just reminded me of the villain from Princess and the Frog. That's all I could think of the entire time. Not talk negatively about Rose the Hat or that guy from Princess and the Frog. He's scary and he's a good villain. No, that guy is scarier than Rose the Hat, which Rose the Hat is the best part of this movie. I know, and I'm not scared of her. I'm not scared of her at all. Rose the Hat is so good because she's like a seductress and she pulls you in before you realize how cruel and bad she is.
I really enjoyed Rose the Hat. And like y'all were saying, she's sexy, and when they're taking in the steam from the victims, they look so like hot and wild and fun. And it's not until later that like as Andy starts seeing some of their practices that I mean she's in, she's into it, but like that it's like, oh shit, like I have been tricked into thinking these people are so like sensuous and desirable, and instead they're murdering children. I want Rose the Hat, the movie. I do too. Dr. Rose. I think that's a big Dr. Hat. I think that's a big problem for this movie, is that even by the end of it, it was like still kind of on our side.
They should have just not made this a shining movie. Like this could should have been his own. I think we can't talk that way because if we had seen this without any of the overlook stuff, I can't even imagine how this movie would have worked without any of that. I agree that I want less Danny. I don't think there needs to be less Danny personally. Oh, I do. He's such a flat character. By the end, he overcomes some struggles internally, but like I don't know, he's kind of scared at the beginning and then just a little less scared at the end. I I thought his arc was really just like, I don't know, it's like here we have this like protector, savior, man, and that's that he's just there in the back, and then we have these more interesting characters who actually have to fight for something because there's danger and there's an actual chance that they won't make it.
And I think that's a lot more interesting than Danny, who, yeah, he does, spoiler, die, but it I don't know. He just to me, I was so uninterested in his dreams. He's the connector, though, of that mentorship of past shiners, if you will. I think that's the most important role that he can play. Yeah, but like I said at the beginning, if he had come in later and the movie hadn't been about him, I think it would have been a spectacular movie. I am really glad that he died. Yeah. I feel like that would have been a cop-out. Oh, oh my god. That really would have made it end up on Disney Channel. Everyone's all happy at the end of the day.
I mean, but if they were to make another movie, he could still be there. Just like Dick Halloran did. Yeah, yeah. And and they will. Um no, no, no, no. This movie's not making money. They're not gonna make another one. I want to get y'all's read on what y'all thought of the uh legacy characters. What'd y'all think of Wendy and Jack and Dick and young Danny? You could even talk about some of the shining characters. I mean, I already mentioned it earlier, but I would pay money to watch The Shining with the new Wendy. 100% Yeah, why? I love Shelly Duvall. I think she's so I mean you're saying this. I think you have more of a problem with Wendy than Shelly.
You know, I think you'd have the same performance, you know, because you were saying you don't like kind of the screamy win uh whims whimsy of her, but that would be the same direction and script she'd be getting whether it was this new Alex uh SO than Shelly Dubai. Uh so I just don't think you like Wendy. Um But I I could be right I thought that this Wendy, I was kind of flabbergasted to bring back Ian's word from last week seeing her. I was like, whoa. I kind of wish, like they obviously went for the look alikes, clearly. She looked very alike. I know, but like I kind of wish that like they would have been like muted in the background, and so it would have just been like a oh my god, that is that that's crazy.
They like look alike, but that it was so close up, it was like, we get it, you're trying to make them look the same. I agree for Jack Torrance. I thought at the beginning they had his hand like on the glass pouring, and the voice sounded like Jack Torrance, and I was into that, and then he's the one that I was kind of like, uh, like you you look like somebody trying to play Jack Nicholson as Jack Torrance. Whereas I thought Wendy looked like just another Wendy. Yo. We're missing a critical thing in this opening area with the bringbacks. Doc. So he's riding his little trike in the hotel. Yeah. Is it just me, or is this the first time we ever actually get to see what he saw when he was triking around and then freaked out at 237?
Because, like in The Shining, I don't think they actually show what he sees when he looks at the door. The only thing they've added is seeing the shadow of the lady. Which I thought was actually one of the most eerie parts of Dr. Sleep uh the whole movie. I I think it all of these like look-alikes would have been better if like we had only seen the back of new Danny. Or we only would have seen like, you know, maybe we just brush past the new Jack's face and like again like the hands and the voice. Like that would have been better for me. And Wendy, I take it or leave it. I think it would have been interesting if we had only seen the new Wendy's face at the very end in the boiler room.
Oh, that would have been sweet. That was a touching scene. Yeah. So I I loved Wendy. I did not love Jack. My problem with the new Halloran is he just was a little boring. I liked Scatman Crothers because he had like, he would kind of like, oh, Danny. Like he had like, he was fun and he was playful. And this one was always like, you know, they're coming to get you, Danny. Like it was just like, ugh, you know. And actually, an a big thing that this movie had to do was there's so many differences between the shining book and the shining movie that they have to kind of find middle ground on here. So in the shining book, Dick Halloran does not die, and so in the Dr.
Sleep book, he's there, you know, as a living person. So they had to figure that out here. What? But then it's a huge difference. So, well, yeah, like I said, there's so much that's different between these two. Um, or those two. But uh yeah, I started Doctor's Sleep, I got about a quarter of the way through and thought this is not for me, so I didn't finish it. But now I'm curious to know how it ends, because at the end of the shining the book, Jack blows up the boiler and the hotel burns down. So if they have to go back to the overlook in Doctor's sleep, I'm curious as to how that happens. And I didn't look it up and I haven't finished the book, so I don't know.
And the whole time in the movie, I didn't think. So this movie, there are no twists, there are no turns, you kind of just know where it's headed the whole time, you know. Disney Channel. And I knew that it was going to end up at the overlook. And but I thought it was going to be like we have to go the overlook, like in our minds or something. So when they actually physically drive to the overlook, I was kind of shocked. Yeah, I would love to know how that happens in the book, just because it's gone in that world. I kinda wanna jump to the baseball boy. Oh. So played by Jacob Tromblay. Seems like he's really getting his screen time these days.
Uh what did you guys think of this part? I kinda loved it. I mean, again, I think this is where danger really sets in. You get some exp some explanations on what the steam is, what's, you know, uh um fueling the true knot. And I thought this was actually really gross and really scary. I thought it was kind of a snoozer. Nothing really stood out. Literally, how? They tie a boy down and stab him like a thousand times. Like at that point, we already know these people are bad. It was just like, okay, here they go. I literally What? What could they have done that would have been more exciting? I would have loved like an overhead of his like body all strung out, but I mean that's it.
What could they have done? I don't know. I've seen I feel like I've seen like that much gruesomeness in like law and order. Not with a child. It just didn't stand out for me. Yeah, they should have at least like showed the cut or something. Man. Like, yeah, nothing. I think I was just too distracted of like How many times have y'all said they show too much? And now y'all want more? I think that's I think it really comes down to the friendliness that I was able to see of the quote unquote villains in this movie. Like, I just I was not scared of them at all. But they no, there was menace in the friendliness.
They were friendly with each other, and I think that's interesting because they're complex and they're not all bad, but they're bad. Vampires. They are vampires. Well, the fulling could have rolled up there, and I would have been like, cool. If that's the only connection you're drawing to Twilight, we just haven't watched enough vampire movies then. Let the Right One In. Yeah, we should watch more. Oh my god. Oh my brain. The first season for one of my favorite movies, Let the Right One In. Oh, this is killing me. I thought that was so that was such a visceral scene. It was a snoozer to me. Well, I mean, I was going to say my next scene that I was really excited about were these two, these two kind of chases where Rose the Hat and Abra kind of came at each other, where Rose flies over the world and it looks really rad.
And then she goes into her bedroom, gets de-gloved in a file box, and there's some fight between her and Abra. And then similarly, Abra finds Rose the Hat at a grocery store and sends her flying out of a freezer. I did love it. Two of my favorite scenes. Yeah. I thought those scenes were incredible. And when Rose the Hat comes flying back, smacks into her body and flies off of the RV roof. Loved that too. I think I think one of the most like entrancing scenes was the grocery store because at that point it was like I don't know where this could go. It could get spookier. It didn't. But at in that point in the movie, I was like, okay, maybe this is gonna get good.
So I guess what would you say the difference was between those two scenes and like the baseball boy scene? I think the grocery store scene had some kind of like, you know, mystery magical sense where there was a certain sense of unknown. Um, so that was a type of like chill or spook. The baseball boy scene, it was just straight up like murder. And I didn't other than the steam coming out of his mouth, it was like, okay, I'm watching any other murder scene, and they aren't necessarily doing it in any like extravagant manner. Ian I kind of go back to the very opening scene when the true knot lures the young gal, young little girl.
Like that for me was actually one of the most uneasy scenes of the whole movie. And so I feel like maybe why Caroline feels like the baseball scene is falling flat is because it was pre it was it was almost too premeditated. So like whereas the opening scene was like right there, it's happening, attack. This was like, okay, kidnap, we know it's happening. But at the same time, I mean, like, looking at the storytelling, you said that you liked the opening scene because there was mystery to it. So this is the payoff to the mystery. You know, we've seen it happen, we wonder, and then it comes back and we see the outcome. So I think from a storytelling perspective, it really worked.
But that's all it was was finishing the story. There was nothing there that threw me off or kept me engaged. It was like, okay, I know you're gonna murder him, get it over with already. But the throw-off is the steam. That's the twist. It's the payoff of yes, they're murdering children, but they're doing it for a reason to absorb their life force. But if we're thinking in the in the veil of the shining, I feel like the power of what makes the shining a scary movie is the mystery. Is the unknowing and the like I feel uneasy, but I don't know why. I don't even know if there sh is gonna be anything that happens, but I feel like there is, and so I'm like, maybe I think it's like really hard to watch Doctor Sleep outside of the vein of also having context for The Shining, because I feel like if you never watch The Shining, I feel like you actually could enjoy this movie more.
But now that I've watched The Shining and I'm comparing this to that, and all because I know what like I know that it's it's hard because I want that, I want more of that mystery that I don't get. And like you do see in Doctor's Sleep them using some of the similar characteristics. Like, I don't know if you guys noticed, but there are some scenes where they used the whole like the soundtrack or the music. They brought back some of the like they brought some of that back where it has like dare I say, no correlation to the scene itself, but it's adding that anticipation that I really enjoyed in The Shining as much as I hated.
I think the mystery of that opening scene versus the baseball scene where we are actually getting a murder is why we're kind of dare I say outraged by that. Because I would rather be more in the like, oh, this is uneasy and weird, and I don't know how I feel vibe. But I know how I feel in that murder scene. Speaking of the score, I honestly really loved when they would kind of have like a weird flash of something, and it would do like the vr, you know? The shining vrm. I didn't notice it in this movie. What? Yeah. It was everywhere. Every time there was a jump, there was do you know the noise I'm talking about?
Or be like, vr. Yeah. I don't know how to make it. I'll play much like that. But every time they had that That's gonna be our ending noise. Every time they had that noise, I was like, ooh, I like it. Just cause like for me, like the mirror of this interesting sound with like a weird flash of a strange image was always Fun. I wish they would have done it throughout the whole movie more. Yeah, I can't remember well. The score itself. I think if they would have if they would have added that, I think it could have helped. I want to hit the two climaxes before wrapping up. So let's now jump to the shootout at the uh campground, where they've lured the true knot in because they're hunting down Abra.
Abra's not there. Jack and his friend Billy, who is not like no one until they're like, oh, he's a character now. And I was kind of like yawn. Uh shootout. That's exactly it. Billy, I didn't care. Um, and then there's this twist where Abra is at home, but actually in danger, because Crow Daddy takes her. I thought that scene was great. The shootout? Yeah, and it was a little too quick and easy for me, but tell us why you thought it was great. I don't know if fast forward to the end where Billy shoots himself. I thought that was an awesome idea. Like, I think just that split second of like get away or like stand back or something, and then she did that and he killed himself.
I'm like, oh that was a good idea. Yeah, I didn't see that coming. Good thing. I didn't see it. I didn't either, and that's why I loved it. But like I said earlier, like it it didn't give me enough time to take it in and be scared of it because it happened, he did it, moving on, and I was kind of just like, I think Doc didn't feel anything. I think with that though, you had to have it happen quickly. And that's what kind of made it really powerful because you're like, what, what? You're like, oh my god. No, but there was no time for us to be sad for him, and for me, that's because I didn't think he was much of a character in Well, that's a different issue.
And I so I one just didn't have very much empathy for Billy, and two, like afterwards, I kind of wanted like if it had just like like he shoots himself, and then you just kind of looked at his body for like two seconds longer, just be like, Oh my god, he just killed himself. Instead, it was like, shoot, he falls out of the screen, and then Danny's like, no, gotta go. Yeah, and I was like, uh, I thought the shootout was it's just like they killed all of them in like three minutes. That was like a zombie scene to me. I was just like, okay, shoot him up. I like I liked the effect of them dying.
I thought it was cool, but it it was just so easy for Dan. Like, I thought there was going to be a fight, and there wasn't. During that scene, I will say that I had the thought, haha, movie, you tricked me. Because I was like, oh, they got everyone. That exact thought. They didn't get crow, right? Or uh I would like for you to refer to him as crowddy. They didn't get crowddy. But like, I was like, damn it, I thought they got everyone, and I was wrong, and they didn't. I think the guys notice that? Well, yeah, because Capra literally says, You missed one, and then he shows up. Yeah. Yeah, but it all happened so fast.
It's like, oh, I didn't even have time to like stop and think, huh. Yeah, I mean, I thought maybe he was in the RV and maybe he was gonna like shoot Billy through the window or something. I knew Billy was a goner, honestly. Um, so yeah, I was surprised when he was at home, but like Caroline was saying, she was like, You missed one, and I was like, Oh, well, it's gonna be a trick somehow. Yeah, but I think the best part of this scene to me was every time Rose the Hat would scream, loved it. I thought that had a little bit more visceral emotion for me than anybody dying. I also did like Snake by An or Yeah, Snake by Andy.
I thought she was a cool character that I would have enjoyed a little bit more screen time for. If you were Billy, would you go with Doc on the road? No, I would have been like, you're crazy. I'm not gonna go with you to find dead bodies and hunt people down. Absolutely not. I can understand maybe why Abra would be able to like convince her dad because he has such an intimate connection with his daughter being involved in this, but him convincing Billy, even if he like shining, like showed him what was going on, no way. And they've been friend for friends for eight years, but Caroline, we've been friends for what six years, and if somebody if you came up to me and you were like, Parker, somebody's murdering children, come help me track them down.
I'd be like, Nah. There's nothing you could say to convince me. It would take the most money I've ever seen in my life, which it's not that much, but I think I think what he was playing off of was that Billy had some sort of like sense. Like I said, Yeah, like if he was a kid, they'd be hunting you too. Yeah. Yeah. Because he like he started the conversation with like, you have a good sense about these things. Like Yeah. He that's what he was relying on. I'm still not convinced. Um one thing that I thought of during the movie you watched Sensei, right? Uh the first season, yeah. And you have not? No. Lots of gay sex, lots of orgies.
Okay, maybe a better thing to compare this to, other than Twilight, is Sensei. I like the variety here. Yeah. But still. That's nice. Yeah. I think Sensei was better. Yeah, this first season was pretty good. Yeah. Uh second season was not very good. I didn't watch the second season. I watched like three episodes. You got a lot more orgies, which I wasn't mad at. Like, I feel like this movie starts Sensei. Onto the Overlook Hotel. There was uh a moment where he said, I know where we have to go or something. Uh we have to stop in Colorado. And I was like, Bah. I was in my seat and I said to myself, damn. Q old school scenes of drone footage.
But I actually loved it. They were driving up the pass and they kept showing like Abraham the car seat and they showed like the gas station. I was kind of like, come on, give me the flying through. And I had thought those opening shots in The Shining flying through like the lakes and stuff are incredible. And I had thought, like, when they were driving, I was like, I'd really love to see these at night. And then they did it, and they played the old music, and I was like, shit. I by the time all that had happened, I was like, I'm ready to blow. Also, this is like super sidetracking. But did you guys notice that the office of the AA leader was like Mr.
Ullman? Yeah. There were a few things that I kind of picked up on. There was that, the other two things I figured out. I was very proud of myself because I didn't look up any Easter egg articles, but this one's not shining related. But when Abra's going to Teeny Town and there's the cross street, Elm Street. I did notice that. That can't be an accident. I noticed that. As like Elm Street, yeah. The other one I noticed was that Abra lives, I don't know what the street was called, but at 1980, whatever their street is. And that's the year that The Shining was made. Or when they showed Elm Street, I was like, I'm sure this exists out there on the internet somewhere.
But like a dimension of the world where all horror movies like coincide in one place. I think that Abra and her friends, Abra and Co. The gang, could exist in the same world as a nightmare on Elm Street. They seem like similar vibes. I bet there's a way to cross those two powers, those two horrors. Yeah. And Twilight and the Not anyway. So incredible flying through the air footage. Good throwback soundtrack. What did we think of the climax at the Overlook? I was a little like yawn at him being like, you wait out here. I have to do this alone. I was like, whatever. You said you really liked the hedge maze. Yes. The Overlook itself.
I feel like they just wanted to recreate those sets. And so they did. And like it well. Yeah, I actually have a quick quote to read you that I took from indiewire.com. Quote Flanagan and his Doctor Sleep team rebuilt the Overlook Hotel for the 2019 movie using the exact blueprints from Stanley Kubrick's film, which were in storage at Warner Bros. Flanagan also spent days analyzing every frame of the movie to track down every book on every shelf and every frame photograph on every wall. No way. That's pretty cool. That's crazy. And that's probably one, a massive expense and like a massive, like imagine how much time and energy and like passion and love that they had to put into that.
The only thing that I didn't like about the remake of the set was the bedroom and the apartment. For some reason that really stuck out, and I was like, it got a little hokey for me. Him looking through the bathroom door? No, like him, like Danny walking through their family's apartment. Like it just seemed a little bit like overdone, like over decrepit, falling apart. But like how how does that work less for you than like the other parts of the hotel? The other parts seemed like they had aged correctly. Okay. But the apartment for some reason stuck in my mind of like they it was like. There was also a weird floral wallpaper on. Maybe that's what it was.
Because at first I was like, oh Dusty. It felt like it was like, oh, Disney remade this apartment. You know, like I'm sorry. It actually felt that way. And then the only scene in the movie that we get a flashback from The Shining was when he looks through the door and we set we see That's the only time I jumped the whole movie. I mean, but that's not the only flashback, though. From the original movie. No, no, no. That was the actress in this movie. Oh, really? Yeah. My thoughts on her chip. I thought that was a real clip. The only um That's the only time I jumped, though. I I think there was uh a fluorescent light that turned on and made me jump.
Uh there the only scene I believe that was not remade and was taken from Stanley Kubrick's movie, I believe, was the blood coming out of the elevator. And they just said there was no way that they could possibly recreate that. So I believe that's the only one that was not remade. Huh. Well, just because the flow of the blood is just as iconic as it comes. So even if there was slight variation in how it was flowing out of the elevator, it would not work. Because I think that's one of the scenes actually Stanley Kubrick spent like an enormous amount of time getting just right. Well, bravo to the new Caroline just went from like an F to a D.
Yeah. I it was so quick, I was like, oh, I stole it from the The Hedge Maze. In a twist, Danny's mind, we think, or Rose the Hat thinks that it's Abra's mind. We know better. I actually couldn't tell. Was that supposed to be a twist for us? Because if it was supposed to be a twist for us, not very good. It was kind of a twist to me. So oh well see, that's why we need other people. I I just loved that scene that it kind of that for me could have been the ending rather than if it had actually gotten her in the box. Yes. Like if they would have drawn out that maze scene a little bit more.
Um They even could have had like Rose taking on like the Jack Torrance, like running through with a weapon, and then Abra running and trying to trick her. That's where I thought they were going with it. Instead of Abra was immediately kind of the antagonist there. Yeah, and then once but then we wouldn't have gotten that really great, like, sexy scene with Danny and Rose the hell. Oh man. Yeah, I was like, fuck, just fuck. Yeah. If if that would have happened, then they would every time he would be like, ah, and she'd be like, I was like, oh. And she was like, yours tastes like whiskey. Oh yeah, that was super hot. Super hot. Uh I think I ship Danny and Rose the hat.
Yeah, okay. Loved the maze. That could have been a nice little bow wrapped up for me. It would have made it too because the shining ends there. But I like the shining book ends with the hotel blowing up and burning down. So I like, yeah. So I like that the movie took it there. Uh I think similar to the shootout scene, I just wish everything was a little bit more difficult. Uh, you know, so this happens with Rose the Hat. I did like this scene. Would you rather would I dunno. I I was not super grossed out by her slashing the back of her knees. I like if it had been an ankle, I would have been like, uh.
But the back of the knee, I was like, I don't think it was meant to be gross. Yeah, I mean what else would it be? I just keeping her from running, that's all it was. Yeah, I mean so then I guess the part between Rose and Danny, hot. I could have watched that whole movie. You know? And then maybe it'd be like he would swing the axe at her, and maybe it would accidentally like, you know, take off the shirt or something. And then maybe she would swing it at him and it'd like rip a hole in his pants or something, you know. You turning this into Dr. Sleepover. Yeah, who do we talk to about our Dr.
Sleep over? Doctor Sleepover. Yeah, well, that's good. It's a room full of steam. I would just call it Dr. Fuck. That'd be good. Um, yeah, I liked that. Uh but then yeah, it was a little strange when he unleashed the boxes, which I was like, when's that gonna happen? Uh but yeah, seeing the people I when Abra sees the shining characters like through the hotel, I liked that, but seeing them all together seemed a little like Adam's family e being like we're gonna get you. Yeah, for sure. That was a little weird to me. I did like the effect of that guy putting his fingers underneath Rose's face skin. Yeah, that was cool. This is where it got a little too off because he turns evil, he chases Abra, and then they have a conversation, and then she runs away and he turns evil again.
And I was just like, It's just like when you watch like a superhero movie or something, and they confront the villain and then they talk for a little bit, and then the villain like gets tricked or something, and it's like, well, if you would have just done what you came for and killed them, then this wouldn't be an issue, but instead you'll have a conversation which wouldn't happen if you were actually evil. So that was a little weird to me, where I was like, Why are you chatting and not killing? I would have preferred Danny to have just bled out and then Abra goes down to the boiler room. What I thought was he was going to be like, listen, this hotel is cannot remain.
You have to leave. I have to go down and set up this explosion to happen. There's no way I can make it out. I would have liked that instead of him turning evil again and going down and then trying to like undo it and then turning good again and be like, no, I have to reset it so it actually blows up. I was just like, what's going on? Just blow it up. I think the whole transition of him turning quote unquote evil was also kind of pokey. Like kind of the brilliance of the shining is like that evil is not something that you can visibly see. Yeah, but I mean that's an issue we've had throughout the whole movie.
So I think we just have to accept it at this point. When his eyes kind of blew open at rose and they were white, I liked that. But when it was the one eye, I was kind of like, but I think it was also tied into this thing where it's like good or bad, in or out, like make a choice, you know. It was just I that I don't know. Yeah, I think I liked it all except for that piece of the ending. Um, but then I was touched when it showed Wendy touching the face and it went in on Wendy and then it zoomed back out, and he was young, Danny. And I was like, uh burned together my bass.
Could have been done differently, but I thought that was really a sweet moment. And actually, it took my breath away a little bit when it zoomed out and he was young again. I was like, But then the next scene, really, I was like, no, get it out, where Abra is like at home and she It's like they do this weird thing where she's talking and maybe she's talking to her mom, and then she's like, She's like, and you, Dan. And then it zooms over, and Dan's there, and you're like, Oh, he lived. And then she's like, the mom's like, Who are you talking to? And she's like, Oh, no one, and it's like, oh, you're so tricksy, my clan again.
Yeah, I didn't like that, and then it was that scene was happening. I was like, Well, we just had the overlook burn down a scene of our protagonist and his mom embracing, and then you keep going. And that's why I was like, How are you gonna end this? And then it ends with Abra seeing the lady in the tub, which is kind of like, I guess, you know, people with the shining live on, so I guess the villains can too, which is a little, I guess, scary in concept. But if it had ended on Danny and Wendy and the Overlook Burning, I think that would have been pretty powerful. Yeah. Um, yeah. So since we've talked a lot, just give like your like short three or four sentence paragraph of just like broad concluding thoughts on The Shining or Dr.
Sleep to wrap up. Indeed, I did not like the first half hour, and I wish it would have focused more on Rose the Hat and um Abra. But after I got through that first push of not really caring about all the character setup, I really enjoyed it. I thought that the visuals were really um almost like some of it was overwhelmingly beautiful, and I really enjoyed some of the supernatural things, and you know, setting the shining aside a little bit, which is totally impossible with this movie. I did just think it was fun, and I really liked it on its own. Maybe it weakens a little bit with The Shining. Um and I thought some really fun characters that I wanted to dive into a little bit more.
Snake Bite Annie, Andy, I'm ready for you. Come back for me. It was not as much of an intellectual thriller that I had hoped it to be. Did I enjoy it? Yes. Do I recommend watching The Shining right beforehand and comparing it? Absolutely not. Because you'll think it's garbage. Piggybacking off of Caroline's comments. I think this is a great intro, scary movie to those uninitiated, uninitiated uninitiated. I do not recommend watching it after the shining. However, yeah, there's not much to this movie that I like it it it it's a movie. I think that's how I describe it. I think it's a movie. I think it's a very cinematic experience. It has great cinematography. I think, yeah, visually and even the sound, I felt immersed in what I was seeing.
I feel like uh what's the movie with the three witches? Hocus pocus. Yeah. I feel like I would watch this. With Hocus Pocus? Yep. I'd watch this in a marathon on a night where I watch Hocus Pocus and then I watch Doctor Sleep. I kept thinking during the movie That is a bizarre night. I kept thinking I kept thinking that they like Happy Death Day to you DUS and like just like totally ran in a completely different direction and like changed the concept completely, and it was just not related whatsoever. I think conceptually there's a thread. I think talking about generational trauma, what's been passed from Jack's father to Jack to Danny, but Danny trying to overcome the uh ghosts of his past.
I think that's pretty strong here. At the end of the day, I think. What made me most frustrated actually is I think the trailer made it seem way scarier than it was. I wouldn't say scarier, but that trailer is fucking beautiful with the um I think it's a like piano cover of Dream a Little Dream or something like that. Uh not even piano, it's like like big orchestra, and then it's got the noises. It does not map to the movie itself. So I yeah, but I mean that's the tricky thing about trailers that kind of trailers suck these days, but some of them are really good, and that's an issue. They shouldn't have even made this trailer scary though.
It like because it just is not. There was a little bit that I thought, like, oh, this isn't super horror. I think that they conceptually pulled it. We we can't. There's no definition. Horror is horror, it's subjective. Uh, I think they pulled out some horror things towards the end, but yeah, scary. Um then, what would you say is your most memorable murder from DR sleep? Billy's my most memorable murder. I think the old man. Ooh, yeah, and he was like, Have you seen Gerald's game? Well, that old man looked like a skeleton to begin with. So it's Well, you should see him in Gerald's game. It seems like Mike Flanagan kind of has his crew of actors, and they're in all of them.
Uh so yeah, he's scary in Gerald's game. I had nightmares about him. Not even kidding. Um, I would say my most memorable murder, of course, is the baseball boy. Y'all did not like that scene. I thought it was unsettling, I thought it was visceral, I thought it was scary, I thought it was icky. You hardened us. I thought Jacob Tromblay. Let's not make this sexual. I I thought Jacob Tromblay was really I like wanted to cry a little bit watching him scream on the ground. Like, I thought that was really sad. And uh intercutting it with Abra screaming, I thought that was powerful. So I'm gonna definitely say uh baseball boy. We know where this is going, but on a scary scale, one to five, how would you rate Dr.
Sleep? One from Ian. Oh, scary scale? Mm-hmm. Yeah, one. I'd give it so I always think about my mom. If my mom saw this movie, she would leave crying at that baseball boy scene. She'd probably leave crying at the first scene with Violet. So it's like if she were listening to this podcast and I were to say one, she'd be pissed. Um, I would probably give it a two and a half on a scary scale. I think there are things that people will have a very hard time with. If you're looking for jumps, this is not the movie for you. If you're looking for ah, chase scene, this is not the movie for you. But I mean, I thought it was a little unsettling.
Not as unsettling as The Shining, which we gave fours and Ian gave a five. So, I mean, take that as you will. And then, would you give Dr. Sleep a smash or a slash? Giving it a smash only for Rose the Hat. You're gonna give it a smash after all that shit you just talked? I just I liked her. I'm gonna have to err on the side of slash. Say it like this. Slash. Slash. Um, I think there are a lot of things that I would like to see be their own movie. Um, be it Rose the Hat, I would like to see an Abra movie, like to see a Rose the Hat movie, I'd like to see the Maze, the movie.
But this movie I don't need to watch again. Your first slash? This movie? You fine. I need to clarify. I would smash Rose the Hat and the rest of the movie can slash. Slash the movie, smash Rose the Hat. Uh, and actually, I would like to rescind. I I was about to say, I'd like to rescind my previous answer of saying I wish that Rose and Danny would fuck, and just like me and Rose instead. Or actually Danny, come on in. I don't know why I have to limit the numbers. Danny, Rose, uh, Crowdaddy. I uh okay. Billy. I take it Billy. No, he just wasn't, you know, very much of a present to me. Uh Caroline, don't get us in trouble.
I mean, you were raving about that scene the whole time. I would like to actually just take everything I've said about this whole movie, throw it in the trash, and me and Crowdaddy hit the road and just sex. Sex trip. Crowddy, I'm not even kidding. I thought was really hot the whole movie. There was some fireworks between him and Rosa Hat, too. So there definitely were. Fireworks. He got the biggest scream too when he shot through that windshield, which was cool looking. I was like, oh. Um could I be your crow baby? I'm actually gonna give this movie a smash. Uh it's like uh it's kind of like you weren't exactly like your profile pictures, and like I'm a little put off, but you're attractive in a different way.
You have a winning personality, and uh like I'm not gonna ask you up to my apartment, but you ask me up to yours. And like, I guess. This has gone on too long. That's what I'm gonna do. I'm gonna smash Dr. Sleep and uh Crowdaddy. You have my name. Alright. Uh on the note, what's your favorite scary movie? I'm gonna keep it the shining. Same. I did not expect either of you to change your answer, and I am going to change mine to Dr. Sleeve. No. I really enjoyed this movie. Are you kidding me? I really enjoyed it. Any credentials on this podcast from Parker? Yeah, are you kidding? Ian talking shit. One about Carrie, back off.
Two about Kelly Duval. We're considered one of the greatest act uh performances of all time. We're noobs. No one listens to us. Carrie comments hit me in the soul. I hate Carrie. And with your good taste, such as Carrie, you are ranking this movie over The Shining. I don't think this movie is better than The Shining. You just said it is. I think there's cinematic art. We were planning on next week seeing The Lodge, but somebody sneaky freaky went in and pushed that release date back to February. So don't believe our calendar online right now. Uh, our next week's movie is T B D. What will it be? Tune in next week. I know. Much like The Shining, it's a mystery.
