HorrorHound Weekend: Our First Convention (vlog)

Should we spin? Spin it around, show yourself. Show yourself. Yeah, now give away. No. Imagine everybody inside can see this. It's your killer host. It's Caroline. I'm Parker, and Ian's behind the camera. And we are here at Horror Hound in Cincinnati. We are so excited. It is all three of our first ever conventions. I have not seen very much, but we just got here and there are some spooky characters running around. I cannot wait to see what's inside. Oh my gosh, we have seen uh an amazing Freddy Krueger and a Jason and a Frankenfurter. We are seeing costumes out the ass. It's amazing. Things I don't even know what they are. Exactly. And we got a little glimpse of the showroom floor.

It looks bigger, more major than I could have anticipated. So we're really excited to get in there and shop, Caroline. What are you looking forward to shopping for today? Well, I really want a cute, maybe spooky crew neck, maybe some pins. I don't know. What are you looking for? I want anything cute. I want to open a box, display a bauble, I want some sort of memorabilia, memories for life being made today. Ian, what do you want from behind the camera? I want a really cool hat. He's looking for a hat. Alright, let's get in there. I can't wait to see everything. Like two seconds in, I already underestimated the merch that would be happening here.

It is crazy in here. I'm getting ready to drop some bills. It's giving commerce. Batman is getting a tattoo. First tattoo. Stay tuned. Pumpkin we saw. Ew, no, that's a little different. It's cute. $165. We are looking at some sickening three-dimensional posters. These are like little film things with posters. Oh, cool. As if I wasn't sold already. I love that. Just enough to be spooky. Oh, it's the whole booth. Oh, cool. Comic book scoops. Gremlins! Can we go in? Alright. I love Gremlins. My favorite Christmas movie. Yeah. Yes, that is so cute. I love the trick-or-treat is really cute. Caroline, what are you buying? Halloween one over here, too. Cat, the pet cemetery cat. Church. Yes.

Oh yes, church. Church the cat. So cute. Paint these really cool, like vintage pendants that are horror themed. Oh, look, there's a Rocky Horror one. Yes. Don't dream it be. It used to be my Instagram bio. But there's one over here that I love that looks like a regular like situation. It's very cute. There's a one-wish willow one. I think we are going to get these three. Oh, wait, wait. We have spotted the clips I'm wearing right now on the show floor. We must get more. There's a final girl clip. Anne's hair's getting long. He needs some. I know. These are all for Ian. He needs to get glam. Nice. Caroline, I'm thinking the lightning bolts.

They glow in the dark. Whoa! These glow in the dark. The eyeballs. Sweet. Cute. Oh, that's cool. Actual little bows. Or the earring wall over here. E.T. These are so cute. I am unwell. Gladys is the star of the convention. Imagine having two little Gladys on the side of your head. I had some already in today. Uh yeah. Perfect. You're a wizard, Harry. Five dollars. You have to buy this, Parker. They're paying us for these bows. Red alert. We are hitting bows. More things for the hair. Oh, well, it'd have to be this because these are my lovers. Bad boys. I think I'll have to do maybe the Billy and stew though. Gonna have to get.

Oh, there's just a plain ghost face. That's cute. No, I think I'm gonna have to get Casey. Yeah, that's cute. Or Nev. Yeah. The Elvira. She's a little more pricey. High qual. Okay, not horror, but like incredible. Hey. Pedro Pascal. Okay, if we spend$35, we get a gift. Are you kidding me? Hilarious. Okay, red alert. We are doing a live reclipping. These gorge, but I need something a little fresh. Okay, Caroline, do the honors. Cute! Oh my god, how does it look? It looks so good. We are checking out some atomic cotton t-shirts. They look very cute. I'm seeing a lot of scream representation. What is this? 16 candles. Oh. You know, not enough people make scream merchandise.

We really need more. This one was up on the That is so cute. It's a scream on the corn. Okay, so tell us about Dent School House. So the Dent School House is celebrating its 30th year this year. We're on the west side of Cincinnati. It's about 25 minutes away from where we're standing at Whore Hound. New characters, new areas, everything is super exciting this year. It's opening weekend for us, so we're open Saturday, so we're open tonight. But yeah, come by and see us. You can check us out online for tickets, or you can just come on up. We're 7:30 to 11 tonight. I'm assuming you've gone through it multiple times. Does it still scare you?

Well, they try to change it up as much as they can every year. They added a new greenhouse area this year, which is really cool. And they redid, they call it the Monster Midway. It's back behind the house, so it's like after the house, it's tough to do. Like there's games, escape rooms, uh, they've got gourmet donuts. Okay. So yeah, it's it's a good time. Alright, Dent Schoolhouse. Check it out. Alright, we are here with Justin from Horror Hound. Justin, tell us a little bit about Horror Hound. You guys just celebrated your 20th anniversary. Yes, we did. So hi, I'm Justin. Uh I'm operations director for Horror Hound and Horrorhound Film Festival. Uh yeah, we've been doing this for 20 years.

A lot of the people that help make this run are volunteers. They're the fans themselves. They put a lot of time and effort to make everything run smoothly, uh, and it's a we become a very tight-knit family. We help the filmmakers that come and show their films here network with other film filmmakers, cosplayers, because they put a lot of time and effort in their costumes. You might need that person to do costumes for your film. This is one of the only places that if you're that unique kid that grew up liking something that not necessarily everybody liked, you find your tribe here. And even if you're not volunteering, the volunteers of the past still come here to hang out.

It's become like the family reunion every six months. I definitely feel like a good family community here. If you were gonna give a recommendation for someone who is at Horror Hound for the first time, us, what would be your recommendation? Well, first I would say, what are you into? There is different aspects of horror. Some people like the special effects. Well, you're here during Mask Fest. Yeah. And Mask Fest, currently, we're on the upper floor. Maskfest is what we call, it's in the basement or the underground. Down there, you can bump elbows with the professionals that made movie magic come to life like Tom Savini. Uh, Tom is down there, he's very approachable, he loves his fans.

Um, Robert Kurtzman's down there. I was the kid that before there was this the special features, I wanted to find something about how the movie was made. These gentlemen used to come on like late-night talk shows and show how the movie magic was done. They were on Nickelodeon back in the day, having those shows. And you get a chance to go down there and meet these people. You like your uh the actors' aspect. There's uh a room up the way, and back there in the vendor hall, there's a section to walk up and meet those actors. The film aspect, the actors, just the people that are passionate about it too. So it's definitely a great group here.

So I'm Linz, and this is Nick, and we're Nick and Lynn's Love Horror. We do horror content online and then local spooky stuff in Cincinnati as well. Yes, we are here with the Cincinnati horror experts, I feel like. And you guys, I've gotta know what's your favorite scary movie. You wanna take it first? So I have two. I have to say scream because it's so good, but also repo the genetic opera is my favorite. Yes. And then mine is Evil Dead. I don't think it gets much better than Evil Dead.

You have Bruce Campbell, you have all the blood in the world, just the ultimate can't be fun time. What's your hot take on the new Evil Dead movie? Are they live are they living up? No, unfortunately, they get a little worse to me each time. I still had an okay enough time with Burn, but I hope they take it in a little different direction with Renat. And I hated it. Yeah, she did not like it one bit. Oh, the Mask Fest is downstairs. Alright, we've gone downstairs. We thought we were at Horror Hound. We are actually now at Mask Fest. And this apparently is a very cool part of the show. I can't say that I have a lot of experience with masks, so I'm ready to don my new passion.

We're gonna get educated. Yes. Let's go. We are seeing masks. Oh my god. What's your name? Uh Dennis Preston. Okay, and you were saying that this gal is your favorite new creation. Uh yeah, I mean, she's she's about two years old, but you know, as far as everything here, she's my favorite, but you also can't forget about the man that time forgot. I didn't forget about him, but time didn't forget. Functional time piece. I'm loving. What is your like, how do you come up with the concept for your monsters? It really just depends on what I'm doing. I mean, I'm I I work in the film industry mainly, so creating prosthetics, you know, creature suits, blood rigs, you know, all that kind of stuff.

So this is really just kind of a side thing for me. Yeah. Uh I mean, these two particularly were for a film themselves, so I didn't design them overall. I had a part in them, but uh I redesigned the paint job just to sell. But uh it really just depends on what comes in my head and what my hands do. Sometimes, you know, a zombie comes out, uh, like this was originally going to be a uh like a vampire, but then it turned into a werewolf bat thing. Yeah. So, you know, you never know what's only happening. I kind of like enjoy working and uh you know letting you know the freedom of the craziness of the human mind just run wild.

That is so cool, and I'm loving all of your women. I've been thinking that horror movies recently have been getting a little bit away from the nudity. I need it back. Well, it there there's ebbs and you know, there's flows to it, you know. There's but if you watch anything on HBO, you know, you get you know, Game of Thrones hit it back hard and then it slowed down again, and then there's that one scene where you see a full-on, you know, uh thing happening in the background of House of the Dragon. And so there's there's flows to it, and it really just depends on who's making it, how old they are, things like that. But nudity is just nudity as long as you respect it, depending on what you're using it for.

So these are gorgeous. And what movie can we see these two in? These two uh you can find in a film that was recently released called Demon Hunter 2. Zoe Kavanaugh is an Irish filmmaker from Ireland, of course. Uh came down here to Kentucky several years ago to create the film, and uh it is now available on streaming, I believe, through Amazon and stuff like that. So these were designs for some of her CGI creatures. So we had the actors in green screen suits wear these over their heads and then she scanned them and then turned them into a 3D design. Amazing. Well, we're gonna check it out. Oh, it definitely should. It's a fun time.

Awesome, thank you so much. Thank you guys. Oh, I love these guys. Look at them. Get a little tissue. They look wet. Don't touch. Look at this. Ooh, look at that blood. Oh, I love that. I love the glass. It says they're wearable. Do you think they can go on your shoulders? Yeah. Wait, they're lightweight and uh flexible, durable. And they have a clip on the inside. So you just take whatever you want to stick it to, like your shirt or whatever you're displaying it on, pinch it, find a little spot, and it just hangs out on there. It's not going anywhere. He's got little rubber grips on the clips so that they really hold. And then you pick whatever color you like and which eyes you'd like to go with it.

And then so it's a little customizable to whatever you're feeling. Yeah, he does different color ranges, he'll do custom stuff with the tails and things like that online. Um I think the orange one is a new color he brought out this year. So yeah. Can I try one on? Absolutely. Yeah, we can. Yeah, yeah. Oh my gosh. How does it feel? It's so cute! They're so light, you kind of forget it's even like. I know, I can dance out of the world. Give us your best move. That's actually how it's everything I just said is a little bit. Oh, these are the things. Yeah, those are cute. Me, my best friend. Red hot pussy lickers. Cute.

Those are fun. Did you make these? I do. These are so cute. You do the artwork too. These are so cool. Um, card. I know, I've actually been a lot more. We could get the faculty, classic, classic 90s. Ooh. We got a little Scooby-Doo action. Oh my gosh, Scooby-Doo and the Alien Invaders. I fucked that up when I was a kid. Ooh! A little chocolate knife. Oh cute. Little characters. Ghost face. Michael. Look at these. Little tombstone crunch, our little midday pick me up. Ian's choice on the dark chocolate, because he's got a dark heart. Spider. This one's cute. What if I just put the whole thing on now? That one's thick'ums. This is ASMR. Do it.

These are so soft. The little Cecilia action. They have other shorts. So my name's Lenora, writer and creator and host of Midnight Rental, which is a late night style horror-hosted show. It takes place in a video store. You can find it on YouTube. And this is a star. She was in the movie Buddy. But unfortunately. Unfortunately, my scene got cut, which is fine. But it was filmed in Cleveland at TRG Multimedia, and Substance is one of the executive producers, and Jeff Yaw wrote this really clever fake sitcom that Kristen Miliati's character would be like flipping through the channels while she's trying to sleep. And it was gonna show on uh the TV screen, and the fake sitcom was called Daddy's Home.

And because kids are disappearing, my character, I was the mom, I kept saying, like, kids, come downstairs, daddy's home, because my on-screen husband comes home, but the kids are nowhere to be found. So I technically my voice made it in the movie, so it still counts. I'm in buddy, yeah. So cool! Oh wait, what was your line that's that stayed in? Uh Daddy's home. You hear you do wind up hearing it on the on the TV when she's like uh laying in front of the TV. Yeah. Wow. So we all loved that movie, so so good, so good. Okay, so our podcast is called What's Your Favorite Scary Movie? So we have to ask, what is your favorite scary movie?

Oh, that is so hard. That's like picking a favorite child, and I don't have children, um, thankfully, for everyone involved. Uh, but my favorite scary movie, I think I'm always going to have to default to Halloween because that was a film that I saw at a young age. I didn't sleep for about six months after I saw it, and it is essentially a bloodless film that I think is every bit as effective today as it was back then. I put it on every Halloween when I hand out candy, and it's it still scares me. I feel like that's the like first impression like that stays with you as a as a horror fanatic. So very cool, we'll check you out.

And can I also get this other goo the green goolade in a medium as well? Go ahead and introduce yourself. I am Tyler Blake, also known as Final Boy Tyler. I do horror content creation, all things spooky, movies, and spooky lifestyle. That's me. Nice. Well, I have my final girl earrings on, so we're mad, Shane. And we have to ask what's your favorite scary movie, Tyler? My all time favorite scary movie is the OG Psycho. I watched that when I was a really little kid, and I think it just did something to my brain chemistry. It's my favorite. You know, I feel like a lot of people. We ask it's always like their very first experience with horror and they just latch on.

Okay, so you saw live in the episode my reclipping. I got this Elvira bow, which was gorgeous and beautiful. This sweet little scream Casey bow, which I will also be rocking.

Um, unfortunately, I don't remember the vendor that we got this from, and um, you know, peace and blessings to them. I bet they're fabulous. So I cannot point you to their shop, but very cute. Alright, we also got I'm on the mic now. Some very cute little banners. I will show you one by one. This is one of our first grabs, it really grabbed us. Widow's Bay. We got a little midsummer, and my favorite thing about this is it says stay till you're 72. And we had to get a little scream representation. Um, so we got the greetings from Woodsboro, which is so cute. It's gonna look so cute in my office. Yay! I love those pendant.

I'm a hat boy, and I successfully acquired a shining hat. I love it. Look at it, I think it's amazing. It's from Paul Bearer Press, where I also got a couple pairs of shorts. I got for myself the evil bows. Oh my land. I got the Sespiria shorts. How cute. Fun, fun, fun. What else? What else do we got going? There's a there's a lot of for the set. We had to get a little Gladys. Gladys, you heard me say it a few times during the walkthrough. She was the star of the show. Gladys is abundant. I can make your parents hurt themselves. I can make them hurt each other. I can make them eat each other if I want to.

Do I want to, Alex? It says so in the back. A beautiful line reading. This is from The Cuddle Colt, uh, designed by Ashley Ross, who was really sweet at the um booth, at her booth. She designed the um illustration and made it. Yeah. The doll. Yeah. Really talented stuff there. I'm also sporting some new earrings. They are my final girl earrings. Uh, this uh vendor is one that is known to the scary movie pod fam already. Yes, because I was wearing some clips and then we got some cute little eyeball clips that we can use. Caroline and I might scare. Split that. Scare, share. Share, scare and share. I also love a beautiful print. I love a little art.

So get a gander at this witch on her bike, her motorbike. He he saw it and it was like three seconds. He was like, When you know, you know. It calls. I picked it up. I said, How much is this? He said, I think 25 bucks. I said, I'm it. And this is from the uh artist. That was before he overshot his budget, though. Matthew Lineham, you spoke to me. Are now going to be in my home because this is adorable. More. My shirts. I think this is the end. Oh, there's more. Okay, to close out the haul from Beast Wreck. We have two adorable shirts. I want to feel that. Look at this. Ooh, those are those are discharged.

Those are discharged. It's a way of um it's a way of screen printing that makes it not like chunky and we have the super cute goul-aid with this little menace here, and then we have a second goula-id with this more kind of uh Cthulhu-esque creature. So that's the haul. What did you guys think of our first convention experience? It was first of all, the people are so lovely. Yes. I feel like everyone was very welcoming and excited to be here, very enthusiastic. Cosplaying, costumes, incredible, uh, vendors, really cool art going on. I have to say the AC in there was bussing because as you can see, as we've done this haul, I have been developing some stains.

Um, because it's hot out here, y'all. Um, I agree, I was honestly a little bit stressed. Um, you know, new environment. I love people who love horror, but not all of those people love me and are mean. But everybody was so nice at this convention. I just always have my guards up, you know. And I think we had a lovely, there were so many people who just came up to say hi to us. So many of the vendors who just wanted to chit-chat about their stuff who were hilarious. I'm sure you saw a few throughout the video. And people were just naturally supportive of what we were doing and curious, which was uh really exciting to see.

So yeah, exactly. I mean, we're not a huge production. Um, and so people taking the initiative to be like, oh my gosh, what are you doing? Like, how can I find you? That's such a fun idea, etc. Like, really nice. Yeah, yeah. So more to come on on conventions, probably in the future. I'd say if I had to give any feedback, I would say if you're at a convention and you choose to fart as you're passing by me, you deserve jail time because I was absorbing scents and smells on this convention floor that no human should be subject to. Hot take. It wasn't that bad. He's being a little dramatic. It was like at least three times someone crop justed right by me.

So, Parker. Horrorhound. Smash or slash. Oh my gosh. Horrorhound weekend is a smash. We might be a little um, we might develop more taste. Taste as we go to more conventions. tasty. Yes, I had a fabulous time. We like I said, we met a lot of people and bought a lot of stuff. It was great. Caroline, what do you think? Smash or slash? It's a hard smash for me.
